Decimal odds (e.g. 2.50) represent total return per unit staked including your stake. Stake × Odds = Total Return. Most common in Africa — used by Bet9ja, Betway, 1xBet, and SportyBet.
Fractional odds (e.g. 6/4) show profit relative to stake. 6/4 means win ₦6 for every ₦4 staked. Common on UK-based bookmakers and historically used in print.
Positive (+150) shows profit on ₦100 stake. Negative (-120) shows stake needed to win ₦100. Less common in African markets but used by some international platforms.
The bookmaker's implied win probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds. Odds of 2.00 = 50% implied probability. If your true estimate is higher, you have a value bet.
All major African bookmakers display decimal odds. The key difference between platforms is the margin — the bookmaker's built-in edge. Lower margin = better value for bettors.
| Bookmaker | Format | Typical Margin | Strongest Markets | Countries |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bet9ja | Decimal | 5–8% | Nigerian football, AFCON, live | 🇳🇬 Nigeria |
| 1xBet | Decimal / American | 3–6% | EPL, Champions League, WC2026 | 🌍 Pan-Africa |
| SportyBet | Decimal | 5–7% | Nigeria football, basketball | 🇳🇬 Nigeria · 🇬🇭 Ghana |
| Betway | Decimal | 5–7% | In-play, cricket, tennis | 🇿🇦 SA · 🇰🇪 Kenya · 🇬🇭 Ghana |
| Hollywoodbets | Decimal | 6–9% | Horse racing, SA football | 🇿🇦 South Africa |
Margins are approximate and vary by sport and market. Lower = more competitive.
A value bet exists when the bookmaker's implied probability is lower than your own estimate of the outcome. Long-term profit in sports betting requires finding and backing value — not just picking winners.
